Senate Republican (Majority) Leadership

As Republicans prepare to take control of the U.S. Senate, the caucus held leadership elections on Wednesday, November 13, 2024. Most notable was the race to replace Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) as Majority Leader, a race McConnell ally John Thune easily won.

    Current Leadership Position: Senate Majority Leader

    Biography: John Thune has been serving as a U.S. Senator from South Dakota since 2005. Born on January 7, 1961, in Pierre, South Dakota, he grew up in Murdo. Thune earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business from Biola University in 1983 and a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Dakota in 1984.

    Before his Senate tenure, Thune served as South Dakota's at-large U.S. Representative from 1997 to 2003. He also held roles as a legislative aide to U.S. Senator Jim Abdnor and as the executive director of the South Dakota Republican Party.

    In the Senate, Thune has been a prominent advocate for agriculture, transportation, and fiscal responsibility. He has held various leadership positions, including Senate Republican Conference Chair and Majority Whip. In November 2024, Thune was elected as Senate Majority Leader, succeeding Mitch McConnell.

    Thune resides in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with his wife, Kimberley. They have two daughters and several grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys hunting, running, and spending time with his family.

    Biography: John Barrasso has been serving as a U.S. Senator from Wyoming since 2007. Before his Senate tenure, Barrasso practiced as an orthopedic surgeon in Casper, Wyoming, and served in the Wyoming State Senate from 2003 to 2007.

    In the U.S. Senate, Barrasso has been a leading advocate for energy development, healthcare reform, and fiscal responsibility. He has held various leadership positions, including Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference. In November 2024, Barrasso was elected as Senate Majority Whip, the second-highest-ranking position in the Senate Republican leadership.

    Barrasso resides in Casper, Wyoming. He is a father and has been actively involved in his community, including serving as President of the Wyoming Medical Society and as a board member of the Wyoming Medical Center.

    Capito resides in Charleston, West Virginia, with her husband, Charles L. Capito Jr. They have three children and several grandchildren. She is known for her bipartisan approach to legislation and her commitment to addressing the needs of West Virginians.

House Republican (Majority) Leadership

Republicans largely stayed with their leadership team as they prepared for the 119th Congress with a thin House Minority. The only position that changed was that of Conference Chair, as Representative Elise Stephanik (R-NY) will leave Congress to take on the position of UN ambassador.

Scalise has held various leadership positions, including House Majority Whip from 2014 to 2018 and House Minority Whip from 2019 to 2022. In November 2022, he was elected as House Majority Leader for the 118th Congress.

    Scalise resides in Jefferson, Louisiana, with his wife, Jennifer, and their two children. He is known for his resilience, notably surviving a shooting during a congressional baseball practice in 2017 and returning to Congress after a remarkable recovery.

In November 2022, he was elected as House Majority Whip for the 118th Congress.

    Emmer resides in Delano, Minnesota, with his wife, Jacquie, and their seven children.

In January 2021, he became the first New Yorker and first Jewish person to serve as Senate Majority Leader.
